Just in case...
…anybody actually looks at this, I’m not here at the moment. Or at least, not cycling. I came off my bike whilst swerving to avoid a car on May 6th, and broke my hip and damaged my elbow. So, I’m off work for 6 weeks, and certainly off the bike. I’ll be back though, eventually.
Commute
Been a while since I’ve had anything to add here, so I’ll just update. Had the bike serviced at Cycle Surgery last night - new brake pads, new spoke yada yada. Rides a bit more smoothly though. Commuting time remained the same though, no marked improvement: proves that it’s the traffic in London, not the bike that’s the main factor in speed and time.

First day back in the saddle, as it were, was a little bit of a struggle. My legs coped just fine, but I almost breathed my lungs out my nose on the way. Just have to get used to it, I suppose. Lovely morning for it though: a bit of a nip in the air which means I didn’t get to test the full benefit of my whizzy new top, but good anyway. Maybe ce soir.

Lordship Rec: New bike park / track →
After winning the Mayor’s dosh, Lordship Rec will be improving all round. Happily, plans include farm, cafe and… bike track! It always used to be there, I’m told by folks who learnt to ride their bikes there, so it’s a welcome update.

Morning: Upper Street
Now a vital part of my daily commute, I take Upper Street in both directions, so it’s a good enough place to start to chronicle the different stages of my journey. Bear in mind, this is for my own interest really: just say what you see.
Starting at Highbury Corner I swoop round and catch the littlest bus lane, on the roundabout, before joining Upper Street itself. It’s an interesting...

Handlebars
I had a fleeting experience of drop handlebars this evening when my own flats decided to tilt of their own accord, while crossing Holloway Road at Highbury Corner. It seems I twisted the grips to be even one too many times, resulting in having to deploy the bike’s emergency stop function, i.e. getting off in an awkward fashion just in time to avoid hitting some giggling bystanders. Good job...

This week's commute
It’s been a busy week at work, this one, due to various staff absences and the like, and therefore I’ve had little time to upload my daily biking map. Actually, it’s starting to be like there’s little point: I’ve consolidated my route to what I think is the quickest it can be now, in both directions, and so it’s just about building up my strength.

The Barnsbury rat run this morning, but frustration at every turn caused a slowish time of 40 minutes. Too many lights, too many other cyclists, all added up to a slog. One cyclist in particular: a lady with flailing red coat, not doing anything inoffensive other than riding slowly (nothing wrong with that), but she ended up as a benchmark for how slowly I was progressing - I lost...
